Thanks’ to Natalie Miller “park naturalist” and the donations of businesses, grants and the volunteer efforts of many folks, Monarch Butterflies will be soaring around the park for all to enjoy.

A garden was planted, seeded with those plants that Monarch’s need to feed on and lay eggs.

With donations and grants secured we purchased a gazebo to be used for rearing the Monarchs.

Volunteers erected the gazebo near the garden. Their work saved us $467.00 that would have cost us for assembly.

With the garden planted and the rearing gazebo built it was time to collect eggs and caterpillars. This work is being done by school kids and scouts, scout leaders and adults from the local community.

Natalie reports that 111 monarchs have been reared and released at this time. 47 have been tagged using Monarch watch tags.

Visit the garden and rearing gazebo to learn more about these beautiful butterflies.

Next year watch for programs including Monarch egg safaris, power points, capture, tag and release of wild Monarchs during migration.

The Friends of Van Buren State Park appreciate and thank all who generously gave donations, grants and volunteer time for this great project. This is another step in our goal to make Van Buren State Park the best little park in Ohio.
